Tent music festival
The Zelt-Musik-Festival (ZMF) has taken place every year in June / July / August for three weeks in Freiburg im Breisgau since 1983 and regularly counts up to 120,000 visitors. A program of music , art , theater , cabaret and sport is presented in various tents and open-air stages. According to the organizer, it is the largest and oldest music festival in Baden-Württemberg. Over the years, more than 600 regional artists and stars from all over the world have offered a program of classical , jazz , rock , pop , world music , cabaret and children's entertainment. Many newcomers were supported. In 2020, the festival had to be canceled for the first time on April 16 due to the corona pandemic.
During the festival, there is free access to the site, on which, in addition to the two large event tents - the circus and the mirror tent - with the concerts, there are two more outdoor stages and a stage in a tent. Concerts, cabaret and youth culture activities can be seen free of charge on these stages. Since 2008 the ZMF has also been working with the youth education center as part of the Youngstars in Action program .
history
The festival was started in 1983 by Alexander Heisler as a continuation of the classic & jazz event series founded in the 1970s at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau together with Uli Homann and Lord Mayor Rolf Böhme . The first festival in 1983 took place on the (old) Meßplatz (gastronomy and circus tent) and in front of the college building II of the university , on what is now the square of the old synagogue ( mirror tent ). In 1984 the three tents were set up in Eschholzpark at the Technical Town Hall. Since 1985 the tents have been set up outside the city center, in a local recreation area near the Mundenhof animal enclosure . Due to the lack of a parking space, the combined ticket was developed together with the Freiburger Verkehrs AG . The admission ticket is also the ticket. The ZMF should be one of the pioneers for environmental protection at events.
In the 1990s, the organizers struggled with major financial problems. The sponsoring association and organizer of the ZMF had to file for preliminary bankruptcy on September 22nd, 2006 - in the year of the soccer world cup in their own country - among other things because of insufficient ticket sales. Since 2007 the ZMF has been organized by the Zelt-Musik-Festival GmbH, which was founded together with ZMF founders Alexander Heisler, Andreas Schnitzler, Dieter Pfaff and Alexander Hanusch, and in which KOKO & DTK Entertainment GmbH has a one-third stake. Alexander Hanusch and Marc Oßwald took over management in the first year. The number of visitors stabilized between 2012 and 2014. Since 2017 the Vaddi Concerts GmbH under managing director Marc Oßwald in cooperation with the Zelt-Musik-Festival GmbH has been entrusted with the implementation of the Zelt-Musik-Festival Freiburg.
Artists and bands such as Jethro Tull , Hannes Wader , Juliette Gréco , Gregory Porter , James Brown , Loriot , or Ten Years After , but also Sasha , Fettes Brot , Katzenjammer , Annett Louisan and Juli performed at the tent music festival .
In 2009, 34,000 spectators attended the festival, in 2010 40,000, in 2011 42,000. There are now an average of 40,000 concert-goers and over 100,000 other visitors on the festival site. In the first 30 years of the festival with 540 days of music, according to the organizer, there were 2,000 events with more than 500,000 concert-goers. In total, there were over 3 million festival visitors who saw 22,000 artists. In 2015, twelve concerts were sold out before the festival began, including the opening concert with Andreas Bourani . In addition to the concerts in the circus and mirror tents, the ZMF traditionally offers free performances in the Fürstenberg tent, on the open-air stage and on the festival site; this also includes a daily action program with small art performances.
In 2014, the American jazz clarinetist Perry Robinson , who has been present at every festival since 1988 - he is also called the spirit of the festival - was honored with the festival's gala night on the occasion of his 75th birthday.
At the 2015 festival there was the first scandal caused by an artist: Lindsey Stirling canceled her concert, which was supposed to start at 8 p.m., at 5.30 p.m. due to excessive heat. She did not want to accept the offer to start later. Instead, the first violinist of the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Manuel Dubrinski, gave a concert. In the big circus tent there were 18 events held in 19 days, in the mirror tent 30 without the 5 club nights, 14 of which were sold out. 350 artists were involved in the main program and 830 artists in the 100 events of the action program. You can also see the promotion of young talent with 570 young talents.
The concert “On behalf of love” by Dieter Thomas Kuhn , which will take place in the circus tent on July 16, 2016, went on sale on August 11, 2015 and was already sold out at 5:20 pm on the same day. For the first time an artist is giving two concerts in one year at the ZMF, and both were sold out in no time.
At the ZMF's “Gala for Peace” 2016, Enrique Ugarte conducted the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra , the content of the gala was also dedicated to him in honor of the 80th birthday of Giora Feidman , the Israeli clarinetist and klezmer musician .
The new district of Dietenbach, which is very close to the festival location, has raised concerns among the festival organizers that they will be forced to move away. The head of the "Dietenbach project group" Rüdiger Engel, the former head of the building law office, says that this shouldn't be a problem because you could secure the ZMF via the land register - in a similar way to the Munich Oktoberfest.
At the opening of the 37th Tent Music Festival on July 17, 2019, the Lord Mayor of Freiburg, Horn, said: "We will plan the new district of Dietenbach in such a way that the ZMF is not questioned". In addition, there is the statement from the head of the Dietenbach project group, Rüdiger Engel, "We will have the ZMF secured in all sales contracts for Dietenbach."
At the autumn evening "ZMF im Waldsee" organized by the Förderkreis Freiburger Musikfestival eV, Pape Dieye was announced as the 2020 ZMF award winner.
