Impala Ray is an indie folk or indie pop project. The main character is singer and guitarist Rainer Gärtner, born in Kösching and raised in Hepberg . The name "Impala Ray" is derived from that of the African antelope species, the Impala , and Rainer Gärtner's nickname, "Ray". Impala Ray became known through the album Old Mill Valley , released in 2014 , which is named after Ray's origin, the Altmühltal . In 2016, the album From the Valley to the Sea followed, which landed a radio hit with a wide variety of acclaim with the single Stay .
history
Ray founded the Impala Ray project in 2012 when he was still working for a Munich media agency. He began to write songs and to produce them on his own with musician friends. Founded as a solo project, Nicola Missel on tuba and his work colleague Dominik Haider on drums initially played on cabaret stages and Munich streets. With the single release The Gambler , the combo played their first small festivals in 2013. In spring 2014, tour support shows for Gabby Young and Fiva followed , with Carmen Unterhofer already providing background vocals . During this tour it turned out that Carmen Unterhofer also plays dulcimer , whereupon she also became a permanent member of the band a short time later. A few months before the release of Old Mill Valley , which appeared on redwinetunes on August 1st, 2014 , Ray decided to quit his previous work as a media designer in order to be able to concentrate fully on the music. The release concert took place in what was then the Atomic Cafe . In 2015 further support shows for Jesper Munk and Hubert von Goisern followed and the Initiative Musik took over the support of the band. On July 15, 2016, the album From the Valley to the Sea was released on the 7us music label with various festival appearances and an extensive club tour. At the beginning of 2018, Ray decided to break away from all existing connections and founded his own label Free Bird Records with his manager and booker Sebastian Zeitz (Innsite Booking), on which the new single Splash Mathare was also released on November 23, 2018 . Impala Ray has announced a new album for 2019.
Impala Ray presents itself live as a band with unusual instrumentation for its genre . Ray is accompanied by Nicola Missel on tuba , Carmen Unterhofer on dulcimer and Dominik Haider on drums and percussion . They also sing for several voices . In exceptional cases, the permanent cast is supplemented by Raphael Missel on trumpet and Daniel Missel on trombone . Every now and then Nicola Missel is represented by Gergö Matyas and Carmen Unterhofer by Annika Popp. The band has already performed internationally. They played alongside festivals in Germany , such as the Reeperbahn Festival , the Woodstock of brass music , the Heimatsound Festival , the Free & Easy Festival , the Oben Ohne Open Air , the Modular Festival , the Zelt-Musik-Festival , the Rocken am Brocken , the great living and stereo , the MS Dockville , the KultURKNALL or Open Flair , including at the Blue Balls Festival in Lucerne (Switzerland), Koll an Aktioun in Luxembourg , the Open Air Music Club of the Lembach Music and Culture Club (Austria) or Tour -Shows in the Czech Republic .
Impala Ray could be seen on television in the ZDF television garden and in the Tigerenten Club as well as concert recordings in the Heimatsound television series about her appearance together with G.Rag & the Landlergschwister in the Herzkasperlzelt at the Oidn Wiesn 2015 and at the Heimatsound Festival 2016.
style
The songs tell stories shaped by life, by wanderlust and homesickness . In addition to fresh up-tempo flair, sentimental sounds with serious topics are also picked up in high contrast in concept albums . The singing often plays a central and present role. The choice of instruments on the debut album Old Mill Valley is very broad, while on the second album From the Valley to the Sea the focus on tuba and dulcimer is increased. Despite the acoustic instrumentation, electronic elements are used in a targeted manner. After the theme of home and mountains is described on Old Mill Valley and the wanderlust journey to the sea on From the Valley to the Sea , the single Splash Mathare focuses on the desert as a symbol of Ray's past in Africa .
