history

Until the church is planted

Although there are references to even older Germanic settlements, the founding of Kösching is officially dated to the year 80 AD. The Romans crossed the Danube and founded the “ Castellum Germanicum ” in order to secure this natural border against the attacks of the Teutons . Later the "Castellum Germanicum" supported the Limes , which ran a few kilometers further north in the forest. This fort was abandoned around 245 . Germanic settlements on the northern Eixelberg continued to exist. Around 895 the place was first called "Cheskingen" and around 1000 the forest was already called "Keschinger Forst". In 1293 Kösching Castle and the forest fell to the Wittelsbach family. A considerable part of the forest is still owned by the Wittelsbach Compensation Fund (WAF).

In 1310 Kösching was mentioned for the first time as a market in the deed of division of the country by Duke Ludwig IV of Upper Bavaria and Count Palatine of the Rhine (later Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian). In 1366 the rights of the ban market were confirmed. Since then, Kösching has held the title of market . In 1649/50 Kösching was hit by a plague epidemic. In 1651, after the end of the plague, the "Brotherhood of Saint Sebastian" was made according to a pledge. Since then, the brotherhood has made an annual pilgrimage (apart from a few interruptions) via Schambach to the Church of St. Sebastian in Arnsberg.

In 1838 the place had 193 houses and 1133 inhabitants, in 1861 510 buildings and 1277 inhabitants (including 7 Mennonites ).

20th century

Kösching survived the Second World War without suffering too much damage to property. However, the market was subsequently challenged in its social skills by around 1200 displaced persons , mostly from the Sudetenland and Hungary. In the following decades, Kösching grew into a larger town.

With the station of the same name, Kösching had a railway connection on the Ingolstadt – Riedenburg railway line . Passenger traffic existed between May 1, 1903 and the final cessation of operations on May 28, 1972.

Incorporations

On October 1, 1971, the previously independent municipality of Kasing was incorporated. Bettbrunn was added on July 1, 1972.

Population numbers

Between 1988 and 2018 the market grew from 5,994 to 9,695 by 3,701 inhabitants or by 61.8%.
