The traces of human existence in the corridor of Wettstetten go back to the last glacial period (60,000 to 70,000 years). Later it was the Celts and Romans who left visible evidence of their former settlement activities. From a geological perspective, Wettstetten belongs to the Jura, which slopes down to the Danube to the south. The oldest documented mention dates back to 821, when Abbot Siegfried von Ilmmünster donated his inheritance in Wettstetten to St. Emmeram in Regensburg. It is also assumed that the bishops of the Eichstätts diocese were founded around the middle of the eighth century. The rulership was initially exercised by the Counts of Hirschberg . In 1305 the Hirschberg property went to the bishop of Eichstätt as a result of a will from the last Hirschberg count, Gebhard VII.

Wettstetten (also Echenzell) belonged from this point in time to the secularization in 1802 to the Hochstift Eichstätt , which from 1500 was part of the Franconian Empire . Thereafter, the place was in the territory of the Grand Duke and Archduke Ferdinand III. of Tuscany . In 1806 Wettstetten came to the Kingdom of Bavaria . In 1808 the Wettstetten tax district was formed from Wettstetten, Adlmannsberg and Echenzelle . Until December 1817 this was part of the Eichstätt Regional Court. With the consolidation of the Leuchtenberg property , this union was assigned as a political municipality to the Ingolstadt district court , later the district of Ingolstadt , in December 1817 . This remained so until the district reform , which came into force on July 1, 1972. Since then, the municipality of Wettstetten has been part of the Eichstätt district, which moved from Middle Franconia to Upper Bavaria on the same day.

For centuries, villages of this type were characterized by peasant labor, although it can also be said that according to early records (e.g. 1447/48) in Wettstetten there had been a higher proportion of so-called small estates for a long time, a kind of rural proletariat that grew more and more looked for employment outside of agriculture. The final and profound change came after the end of World War II . The nearby Ingolstadt grew out of the old fortress walls and achieved industrial expansion mainly through the Audi company (formerly DKW). Wettstetten has become a coveted community for many to this day.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018, the community grew from 3,624 to 4,989 by 1,365 inhabitants or 37.7%.
