Initiative music

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The non-profit initiative Musik promotes the music industry in Germany on behalf of the German federal government . The work focuses on pop and rock music as well as jazz . The initiative, which is financed annually by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media with 16 million euros, has supported over 1,500 musicians and bands in 48 funding rounds since it was founded in October 2007 (as of February 2020).

Sponsorship and funding

The initiative, which is organized as a non-profit GmbH , is supported by the Society for the Exploitation of Ancillary Rights (GVL) and the German Music Council . The GVL and GEMA (partly through the GEMA Foundation ) finance the initiative with 500,000 euros annually. However, the majority of the budget is provided by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, with an annual amount of 16 million euros, who makes this amount available by resolution of the German Bundestag .

Goals and tools

According to the initiative, the aim of the initiative is to promote young musicians and integration . In addition, the distribution of German music abroad is to be supported. Since 2012, one of the goals has also been to support live music clubs in Germany.

The funding institution would like to achieve these goals, in addition to smaller projects, primarily through artist and infrastructure funding . In the program for artist funding , a musician or a band and a company, such as a music label , are funded. The funded act receives an amount between 10,000 and 30,000 euros per funding round, but a contribution of at least 60% is required. By the beginning of 2020, around 20–60 artists were supported in 48 so-called funding rounds , some of them several times, so that a total of around 1,500 artists were supported.

In addition, there has been short tour funding since 2010 , which supports musicians and bands with a residence in Germany with special performances abroad (e.g. at showcase festivals).

People, companies or institutions from the music industry can apply for funds to support infrastructure . You will receive up to 100,000 euros each, here too a contribution of at least 60% is a prerequisite for funding.

The following funding programs exist in the live area

  • APPLAUS - Award for program planning of independent venues, since 2012
  • Digitization of the performance technology in live music venues in Germany (in short: Digi-Invest), since 2016: serves to safeguard and increase the cultural diversity and program quality in live music clubs. Is realized together with the LiveMusikKommission eV (LiveKomm).
  • Technical renewal and renovation needs in live music venues in Germany (short: TE-SA), since 2017: supports music clubs with acquisitions in the areas of stage technology, visual performance technology as well as sound and backline technology in order to improve the acoustic and auditory performance situation.
  • Live 100, since 2020: Funding of small concerts

The Initiative Musik also wants to actively strengthen the German music industry abroad with its own projects under the names WUNDERBAR and GERMAN HAUS. Since 2010, this has included the lighthouse project GERMANY AT SXSW, the German joint presentation of the cultural and creative industries at the world's largest showcase festival South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. In addition, the Initiative Musik is involved in international networks such as B. European Talent Exchange Program (ETEP) and European Music Exporters Exchange (EMEE). The export activities are rounded off with themed trips for the visitor program of the Federal Republic of Germany, which are carried out on behalf of the Federal Foreign Office.
