The Rocken am Brocken Festival (short: RaB; also: Rocken am Brocken in Elend bei Sorge ) is an annual three-day open - air music festival in the Saxon-Anhalt city of Oberharz am Brocken (district Elend ). The festival runs under the motto "Nature-Music-Friendship" and takes place on the Gieseckenbleek meadow , which borders the Harz National Park .

history

The idea of organizing a rock festival in the Harz came from two former students from the Harz University of Applied Sciences in Wernigerode in 2004 . The first Rocken-am-Brocken-Festival took place on August 24th and 25th, 2007. One of the first bands was the Dinslaken group Kilians .

In 2011, in addition to the main stage and tent stage, the organizers also introduced two small electrofloors, on which various DJs play in the open air during the festival. The five different stages are called Brockenbühne, Jäger circus, Hexenhütte, Zauberwald and Klangnest.

In addition to the supporting program, the extra ticket is offered for participation in the “acoustic path”, a guided hike through the Harz National Park with various stations where bands and musicians perform. In addition, workshops and readings, a football and volleyball tournament and the “duel of the giants” take place on the site.

In the village of Elend in 2018, under the motto "Green Tents", the opportunity to camp away from the festival area was offered for the first time. Quiet between midnight and 7 a.m. and a ban on ghetto blazers and music systems.

In 2018, grilling, smoking and fire of any kind were prohibited on the festival site in the Harz Mountains due to the highest risk of forest fire (level 5); a barbecue area monitored by the fire brigade was set up and smoking areas designated.

The edition planned for July 30 to August 1, 2020 was canceled in April due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

In addition to the usual means of transport, it is possible to travel by the Harz narrow-gauge railway . On the 1,000 mm narrow-gauge line between Nordhausen and Wernigerode , steam-hauled trains are used in addition to diesel multiple units.

In 2009 the “Rocken am Brocken” festival was ranked among the ten best festivals in Germany by the Berliner Tagesspiegel and Freenet.de . In 2010 the festival name “Rocking on the Brocken in Elend bei Sorge” was the main component of the 64,000 euro question in “ Who will be a millionaire? ".
