Torpus & the Art Directors is a folk band from Hamburg , which was founded in 2009.

history

The band was founded as a solo project by the singer and songwriter Sönke Torpus in early 2009. Torpus originally comes from Niebüll in North Frisia . Together with the guitarist Melf Petersen and the drummer Felix Roll he played in a rock band there in 2004. After graduating from high school, they moved to Hamburg together to concentrate fully on music.

After the band split up, Sönke Torpus continued to make music himself under his last name, and a little later together with Melf Petersen under the name “Torpus”. In September 2009 Torpus and Ove Thomsen, who was a friend of the band, had the opportunity to musically accompany a relay race through Germany, in which Melf also took part. After that Ove, also known from the band OVE , was a permanent member. In the following months Torpus played wherever the opportunity arose, with a changing line-up. Shortly before a major concert in North Friesland, Torpus was first announced on posters as “Torpus and his Art Director”, from which the current name is derived. Bassist Jenny Apelmo joined them later.

In 2010 the band recorded their first album Five Leaves Left on their own . 2011 followed an EP Dancing Kids & Summers Laughter and the contact to the Grand Hotel van Cleef-Booking came about. The second album From lost Home to Hope was finally released on October 12, 2012 on the Hamburg label Grand Hotel van Cleef . Melf Petersen left the band in 2018.
