Drangsal (bourgeois Max Gruber , born August 4, 1993 in Kandel ) is a German singer , songwriter and multi-instrumentalist . His music shows influences from different genres, including new wave , post-punk and indie pop .

Life

Max Gruber grew up with his older sister Alena in Herxheim near Landau / Pfalz . He was born in Kandel because Herxheim does not have a hospital. When he was eight years old, he got a drum kit. He taught himself to play all instruments . Gruber is close friends with the band Sizarr , which comes from Landau , not far from Herxheim , and through whom he also got to know his future producer Markus Ganter . In his youth he was greatly inspired by Marilyn Manson , Morrissey and Boyd Rice . In his hometown he attracted attention and offended by his demeanor and interests. He started smoking at 13, started smoking pot at 14, and got his first tattoo at 17. At the age of 18 Gruber moved to Berlin , but felt overwhelmed by the size of the city and moved to Leipzig with the Sizarr singer Fabian Altstötter for a year . He is now living in Berlin again. He broke off studying English and American studies after a few weeks.

The stage name Drangsal was inspired by the name of a Landau funeral home . As you can see on the cover of the debut Harieschaim , Gruber also has the word tattooed on his right forearm.

In September 2013 Drangsal released demo recordings for the songs Wolpertinger and Allan Align on Soundcloud .

In 2016 he appeared with a live band (consisting of Sam Segarra, Tim Roth and Christoph Kuhn) in the opening act for Kraftklub and Casper . Tim Roth left the live band that same year, and Oliver Heinrich ( Yesterday Shop , Missincat ) has been playing in his place . Theo Kraus also joined the band in 2017.

The music video for the first official single Allan Align attracted media attention, as Jenny Elvers played the leading female role in it. In terms of text, Gruber was influenced, for example, by George Bataille's story of the eye .

For Record Store Day 2016, he released a strictly limited 7 " vinyl with the songs Will Ich nur dich , Zur Blue Hour and Hinterkaifeck (All This Violence Remix) . He then made it available for free download for six days.

On April 22nd, 2016 his debut album Harieschaim was released , which is named after the ancient name of his hometown Herxheim. Gruber produced it together with Markus Ganter , who has worked with artists such as Casper , Tocotronic and Sizarr , among others . A song on Harieschaim is named after the town of Hinterkaifeck , which was the scene of a multiple murder of Gruber's ancestors .

In the summer of 2016, Drangsal performed with a new live line-up (consisting of Sam Segarra, Oliver Heinrich and Christoph Kuhn) at numerous music festivals in Germany . In autumn 2016 headlining followed tour through Germany, Austria and Switzerland , which was continued in March 2017th Drangsal won the 2016 Pop Culture Prize in the “Most Hopeful Newcomer” category .

At the 2017 Echo Awards, his album Harieschaim was nominated in the "National Critics Prize" category. Together with Kreator and the singer of the Swedish band Ghost , Drangsal could be seen as a musical guest in the program Circus HalliGalli in April 2017 . Gruber wore a nun's costume during the performance.

Between June and July 2017, Gruber hosted his own program on the private radio station Flux FM with the title Praxis Dr. Angsal - The music consultation with Max Gruber . Guests were among others the musician, author and visual artist Hendrik Otremba , the Swiss singer Dagobert , the Berlin band Gurr and some other musician friends of Gruber.

In the summer of 2017, the single No Fear by Casper was released , in which Drangsal was a guest artist. In 2017 Gruber also released songs together with Leslie Clio , Die Selektion and the Berlin band Violence . He contributed a remix of Tokio Hotel's single Boy Don't Cry in October 2017.

On April 27, 2018, the follow-up album to Harieschaim was released with Zores . It was produced in collaboration with Markus Ganter and Max Rieger ( Die Nerven , All these violence ). The album entered the German charts at number 12 and was largely welcomed by the press. For example, Rolling Stone wrote : “There are ingenious bass runs on 'Zores', light-dark melodies, lines that stay in your memory thanks to lyrical barbs, and with '-ACME' an extremely strong, noisy final piece. [...] He is very close to the large, light-footed Pop design. And despite all the superficial courtesy, his music remains stubborn and somewhat unpredictable. ”Jochen Overbeck wrote in his review for the Musikexpress :“ What a maddeningly interesting album, what a guy. ”

His manager is Stephan Rath from Die Goldenen Zitronen .

Music genre

Drangsal's music on his debut album is heavily influenced by the synthpop and post-punk of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Inspirations include Depeche Mode and The Smiths . The musician himself claims to have been inspired by artists such as The B-52s , Prefab Sprout , XTC , Tool , The Residents and Ina Deter . Zores marks a turn towards indie rock / pop with a slightly dark tone; only a few songs (such as Arche Gruber , ACME ) are in the style of their predecessor. The melody of the first single on the album, Turmbau zu Babel , has been compared several times with the doctors and Farin Urlaub . Drangsal himself denies that the change to German on a large part of the album was decisive for the new musical direction, as he had previously published several songs in German.
