Ina Deter (around 1983)

Ina Deter (born January 14, 1947 in West Berlin as Ingrid Deter ) is a former German singer and songwriter from the fields of NDW, pop, rock and chanson. She gained notoriety above all through her song New Men Needs the Land , whose title line became a cultural asset either unchanged or with any object and adjective as a winged word.

life and career

Beginnings and songwriting time

Ina Deter comes from Lübars , a rural district in the then enclosed West Berlin. At the age of eleven, she began taking guitar lessons. At the age of 16, she founded the skiffle band Lucky Girls , which was deliberately made up of women, and of which she was already the singer. After its collapse, she gave appearances as a country and western musician for a time in front of the stationed soldiers of the Allied forces. Then her path led to the legendary West Berlin scene of the folk - singer-songwriter to Danny Marino , Reinhard Mey , Wader , Schobert & Black . On the Charlottenburg pub stages, Danny's Pan , Go In and Steve Club , the young artist mainly interpreted songs by Joan Baez and Bob Dylan .

After completing her graphic and design studies at a private school, Ina Deter was now employed in an advertising agency. In 1969, after the agency had moved, she left her hometown for Cologne . Her musical career came to a standstill there, as she did not find any of the usual pub stages. All the more, she turned to the women's movement , which gathered around Alice Schwarzer in Cologne. In those years, the fight against the abortion ban under Section 218 of the Criminal Code entered its hottest phase. Ina Deter contributed her first own composition in 1974, I have drifted off . Pre-financed by a sponsor, the song was released as a single under her real name Ingrid Deter.

Gradually there were opportunities to perform again and Ina Deter discovered composing and writing for herself. She caught the eye of talent scouts with one of her new pieces, the love song, which is kept in very high notes throughout. If you are like your laugh . Then she received an invitation to the German qualification for the Eurovision Song Contest 1976 . Apparently for this competition she took the stage name Ina Deter, probably to avoid confusion with her singing colleague Ingrid Peters (who in turn represents a stage name). Tenth place out of twelve contributions jumped out. Days later, she moved up to ninth place after Tony Marshall was disqualified from winning the title . According to an anecdote often told by Ina Deter, albeit not with certainty of fact, several record companies contacted her as a result of the improved placement. She decided to sign up with CBS . If you are like your laugh accompanied your further career as a cult song.

Ina Deter stopped working as a graphic designer in order to concentrate fully on the music. Several albums were created in the songwriter style. This was linked to her claim to always develop notes and text herself. In terms of content, their songs already revolved around a wide variety of topics. The meeting with bassist and producer Micki Meuser and guitarist Manni Holländer was of great importance . The three of them not only expanded the body of the music, but also worked on shifting Ina Deter's singing from the light head voice to the more powerful chest voice. On the fourth album All Beginnings Wir (1981) these tendencies can already be partly heard. In retrospect, that was the turning point. After the termination by CBS, the LP was released by a small record company (blue cover, "Ina Deter & Band"), and due to legal disputes then again by Phonogram (pink cover, "Ina Deter Band").

Breakthrough, high phase and ebb

In 1982 the Ina Deter Band released the NDW- influenced pop album New Men Needs the Land . There was no fixed group behind the artist name (even the loyal colleagues Micki Meuser and Manni Holländer actually had their own band called Nervous Germans ). Front woman Ina Deter presented herself on stage sometimes combative and diva-like, for example in the refrains of the songs New Men Needs the Land and Ob Blond, Ob Braun, or whether Henna demeaned all existing men as useless and interchangeable. These advances were, however, at the same time appeased by means of many other elements, e.g. B. through funny and unrelated verse texts, especially in those songs, through the male band line-up, or also through numerous love songs sung.

It was not until the summer of 1983 that the album and title song entered the German charts. The fact that no single-digit placements were achieved despite months spent there is disproportionate to the importance of the song. With its headline, which is widely interpreted as vague, emancipatory, it is still a political issue today. In addition, the broadcasters thought caution was necessary because of the tense national political situation . On the other hand, the saying "(New) (men) needs the country" soon developed into a winged word in all circles and in the entire German-speaking area . A Google query produces several hundred thousand hits.

Thanks to the hustle and bustle of new men in the country , Ina Deter was one of the stars of the German music scene in the mid-1980s. The Ina Deter Band went on a tour with 180 concerts, including participation in festivals in the Netherlands and Denmark. Further highlights of the phase: concert recordings on television at Rock from Alabama or Live from Alabama (1983, 1986), live singing in the live broadcasted ZDF hit parade (2 × 1983, 1986), performance at the Festival of Political Song in der GDR (1983), portrait for the television documentary Frauen unter Strom (1984), participation in the benefit project Band für Afrika (1985), part of the Rock am Ring (1987) line-up. In contrast to the sound carriers, the music at the concerts was indeed implemented in a rock-like manner. Although she is already in her fourth decade, Ina Deter still looked very youthful, not least because of her lively nature at 1.50 m height. A constant feature of its often changing appearance was a pink electric guitar, which is now on display in the Gronau Rock'n'Pop Museum.

While the ideas for the less popular album With Passion (1984) had suffered from the lack of calm, the successor Women Come Slowly - But Mighty (1986) achieved another greater success. Her partner at the time, Jo Steinebach, and Edo Zanki as producer were involved in the work for this ; only "Ina Deter" is given as the interpreter. The title song walked the tried and tested fine line between provocation and harmlessness, except that Ina Deter also tested the audience's reactions with a clenched fist during performances.

Twelve years after their first collaboration, Ina Deter and Manni Holländer began a private relationship in 1990. So she moved from Cologne to join him in Aachen-Vetschau . Professionally, however, the career decline could not be stopped. The hit with the famous line “The country needs new men” became more and more a curse because every new work had to be measured against its success from the outset. In view of the steadily decreasing sales and hall sizes, Ina Deter withdrew from the music business in 1993.

Activities after the break

In the meantime she devoted herself to her further interests in theater, writing and painting. In 1997 she continued her musical career without the previous pressure to succeed. After the turn of the millennium, a new idea matured in her, which, according to her own information, she considers herself particularly lucky: to translate chansons by the former French singer Edith Piaf, whom she admires, into German. With the support of a chamber orchestra, she performed the program as Ina Deter & Die Compagnons on stage and album. During the same period, however, she also had to endure breast cancer.

In 2005 Ina Deter moved back to her hometown Berlin. As far as is known, she now lives in Berlin and Spain. Recently, appearances were only sporadic for events in favor of breast cancer screening.
