geography

He is close to the Dutch border and the highway border crossing Vetschau of A 4 . The Huf settlement is directly adjacent, but belongs to the Aachen district of Richterich . Not far from Vetschau, the Aachen – Maastricht line used to run via Simpelveld, which is still operated today by the Zuid-Limburgse Stoomtrein Maatschappij as a museum railway from Vetschau to Simpelveld.

history

As the tombs and ruins of Roman settlements prove, the earliest rural settlement of the farms and the entire town goes back to the construction of a former Roman road between Aachen and Heerlen that ran through this fertile stretch of land . According to some sources, the Battle of Aduatuca presumed to be here is more likely to be classified in the area of unproven speculation, since such a large battle must have left clearly traces of archaeological evidence.

Great Niersteiner Hof, former Vetschau castle

From the Middle Ages, Vetschau belonged to the Aachen Empire as one of the northernmost corners and was also a border town to the Duchy of Jülich . Coming from Orsbach , the Aachener Landgraben initially ran to the northern edge of the village, from where it then moved on to the eastern edge of the village via Huf in the direction of Laurensberg-Hand. At that time the manors and their agricultural areas were fiefdoms partly of the Imperial Burtscheid Abbey , partly of the Aachen Marienstift and later the property of the city of Aachen. Until the beginning of the 20th century, these farms continued to be managed as leasehold farms and then mostly came into private ownership. At the same time, more and more townspeople settled in the village and the former rural hamlet grew into a small street village .

Buildings

Vetschau includes the monuments Niersteiner Höfe from the 14th century, the Vetschauer Mühle on the nearby Vetschauer Berg, a tower Dutchman windmill built in 1798 , and numerous other old manors. The mill and the wind turbine as well as the entire top were dismantled around 1850 and are still preserved today in Vrouwenheide, a district of the village of Übachsberg, about 10 km away.
