Until 1992 there was a train station in Simpelveld (located on the Aachen – Maastricht railway line ), but it was closed due to insufficient passenger traffic. Since 1995 the route has been operated as a museum railway by the Zuid-Limburgse Stoomtrein Maatschappij (ZLSM), which only offers a Sunday tourist train and also special summer trips. The Simpelveld train station is also the headquarters of ZLSM, which has also taken over the Schaesberg – Simpelveld railway line ( million line ), which runs from here via Schaesberg to Landgraaf and was so named because of its extremely high costs.

Simpelveld is located in the south Limburg hill country, the Mergelland . The well-known Simpelveld sarcophagus was found at a Roman villa Rustica near Simpelveld .
