Bocholtz is a district of the municipality of Simpelveld in the south of the Dutch province of Limburg . It is located directly on the eastern border with Germany. Bocholtz has 5,130 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2018).

History and population

Until January 1, 1982 Bocholtz was an independent municipality, which last had around 5,358 inhabitants (1980 census). After that, Bocholtz became part of the Simpelveld community.

The place name Bocholtz is probably derived from beech (the tree or a beech forest), as in the German city of Bocholt .

The local dialect, called "Bòcheser" in Limburgish, is described as being east of the Benrath line . It belongs to the same group as Ripuarian or Middle Franconian . See also under Zuidoost-Limburgs .
