Roerdalen ( listen ? / I ) ( German Rurtäler ) is a Dutch municipality in the province of Limburg . Audio file / audio sample

The municipality was originally created in 1991 through the incorporation of the previously independent municipality of Vlodrop into the municipality of Melick en Herkenbosch. It has been called Roerdalen since 1993. On January 1, 2007, the neighboring community of Ambt Montfort was incorporated, which means that the community doubled its population.

Districts

Part of these six districts are u. a. the residential areas and farmers' associations Aan de Berg, Etsberg, Holst, Lerop, Paarlo, Reutje, Varst and Vlodrop-Station.

(As of January 1, 2018)

Geographical location

The villages are in the lowlands of the Rur . The villages of Posterholt and Vlodrop, and the northern forest and heather area of De Meinweg National Park are on the German-Dutch border.

history

Sint Odiliënberg Basilica

The villages Melick and Vlodrop were first mentioned in documents in 858 and 943 respectively.

The single-track railway line Iron Rhine has been running through the municipality since 1879 . The reactivation of the disused route is controversial. Attempts to mine coal were stopped after a few years with the closure of the Beatrix mine in the northern municipality in 1962.

coat of arms

Blazon : Split, in front in red an upright, two-tailed, black-eyed, silver lion, divided behind, divided six times at the top by silver and blue, below a red heraldic lily in silver. A looking upright lion with an open mouth in natural colors serves as a shield holder - he holds the shield in front of his body, with his front paws on the upper corners of the shield, so that the shield covers the entire lion except for the head and four paws.

The coat of arms held by a lion combines the coats of arms of the three villages: the lion from Melick and Herkenbosch, the red lily from Vlodrop and the three blue bars from Posterholt.

Town twinning

  • There is a city partnership with the community of Birkenfeld an der Nahe in Rhineland-Palatinate.
