Sint Odiliënberg ( Limburgisch Berg ; Dutch spelling: Sint-Odiliënberg ) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg and belongs to the municipality of Roerdalen . The place had 3,350 inhabitants in 2018.

geography

The place is located directly on the Rur and about five kilometers southeast of its confluence with the Meuse near Roermond.

history

The place goes back to a Roman settlement. In 706 the missionaries Wiro , Plechelmus and Otgerus founded an abbey here , which became important for the Christianization of the Netherlands. During the time of the Viking invasions, the Utrecht clergy found refuge in the village. Montfort was liberated from occupation by Wehrmacht troops in January 1945 as part of Operation Blackcock by Allied troops . In May 1940 the Wehrmacht conquered the Netherlands, Belgium and parts of France in a blitzkrieg in the western campaign .

Attractions

Windmill
  • The core of the two churches standing on a hill on the outskirts of the village, a two-tower Romanesque basilica , which is dedicated to Saint Wiro, Plechelmus and Otgerus and the little Onze Lieve Vrouwekapel, date from the 11th century .
  • A windmill (Molen van Verbeek) dates from 1883.

  • The Roerstreekmuseum below the basilica shows archaeological finds and aspects of local history.
