Mook en Middelaar ( Limburgish Mook en Middelar ) is a municipality in the far north of the Dutch province of Limburg . In the west, the municipality borders on the province of Noord-Brabant . The municipality of Mook en Middelaar consists of the localities Middelaar, Molenhoek (partially), Mook and Plasmolen. The seat of the municipal administration is Mook . The Maas-Niederrheinpfad runs through the municipality .

history

The remains of a Roman villa from the 2nd century can be found on the Sint Jansberg estate in Plasmolen. In the 1930s the archaeologist Braat from Leiden examined them . The finds go back to the largest known Roman main building in the Netherlands, its dimensions are approx. 85 m × 24 m. This archaeological monument has been under legal protection since 1978. In 2001 the municipal council decided to preserve the remains of the Roman villa and make them accessible. Objections delay the execution of the resolution.

On the banks of the Meuse near the Cuijksesteeg there are the remains of a Roman bridge from the 4th century. The bridge is protected by law.

Mook is best known for the Battle of the Mooker Heath on April 14, 1574, a field battle between the Orange and the Spanish during the Eighty Years' War . At that time, the Mookerheide stretched to the city walls of Nijmegen .

The places between the Meuse and the German border belonged to large landowners. The entire area that today forms the Province of Limburg consisted of a large number of duchies. Mook was in the Duchy of Kleve, Middelaar was in the Duchy of Geldern. During the French occupation, the municipality of Mook en Middelaar was formed on October 23, 1800 . An old boundary stone on Katerbosseweg reminds of the former duchies.

During the War of the Spanish Succession , Middelaar was occupied by Prussian troops and remained German for about a century (until 1814).

During the Second World War , a fierce battle raged in the municipality of Mook en Middelaar . In May 1940 the attackers were stopped by the large casemate line on the Brabant side of the Meuse, with the village of Katwijk on the Maas burning down and the railway bridge between Mook and Katwijk being blown up.

Also in September 1944, Mook, Plasmolen and Middelaar were in the front line and suffered much war damage. The inhabitants of the municipality of Mook en Middelaar fled to other places until the liberation.
