Location and economy

Venray lies between the Meuse and the De Peel nature reserve , which forms the border with the province of Noord-Brabant . Oostrum, 2 km east of Venray, has a train station on the Nijmegen - Venlo - Roermond railway line . From here buses go to Venray itself.

Venray is also on the A73 Nijmegen - Venlo motorway .

The US company Xerox operates a factory in Venray that produces photocopiers. In addition, there are small factories and trading companies. There are also numerous jobs in nursing: there are two psychiatric hospitals, several old people's homes and a regional hospital.

The area around Venray has an important agricultural, gardening (flowers, asparagus) and animal husbandry (fattening pigs).

history

The village of Rooy or Rode existed as early as 1200 (the name refers to a settlement created by clearing the forest). In the 15th century it belonged to the Duchy of Geldern . A Latin school founded in 1651 and several monasteries point to a heyday in the late 17th century . This was partly caused by the high-yielding peat extraction in the De Peel bog . In the 18th century there was a serious decline and a lot of poverty. When the railway connection came about in 1883 and clever farmers raised a good breed of sheep and knew how to export many of these animals to Australia and New Zealand , Venray flourished again. The Peel area was partially reclaimed, which brought about an improvement in agriculture.

In World War II Venray suffered much. The Peel-Raam position ran straight through the municipality, and in 1940 (German conquest) and 1944/1945 (Allied conquest) there was great war damage. Many people also fell victim to the war. From 1952 an industrialization plan was carried out with success.
