biography

Godefridus Henschenius joined the Society of Jesus in 1619 . He distinguished himself primarily through his knowledge of the Greek and Latin languages as well as in church history.

In 1635, his teacher Jean Bolland called him in to work on the monumental work he had begun for the Acta Sanctorum . At the invitation of Pope Alexander VII and the Jesuit General Goswin Nickel , Henschenius traveled to Rome in 1660 on behalf of the sick Father Bolland to collect material for the Acta Sanctorum in the local libraries . He was accompanied by his younger brother Daniel Papenbroeck , who also kept a diary about the two-year trip, which was only published in German in 2002 and is of great religious and ethnological value.

After Bolland's death in 1665, Henschen continued work on the Acta Sanctorum together with Father Papenbroeck .
