Portrait of Goswinus Nickel

Goswin Nickel (* 1582 in Koslar ; † July 31, 1664 in Rome ) was the 10th general of the Societas Jesu .

Life

Goswin Nickel was the son of the Jülich Mayor Johann Nickel. He studied in Paderborn and Mainz (1611-1615), where he was ordained a priest on October 28, 1614.

Nickel was temporarily active as an order provincial, for example in 1631 he supported the friar Friedrich Spee when he was asked to revoke his writing Cautio Criminalis , which was directed against the persecution of witches . New research on the second edition of the book even suggests that it was published with the approval of the Provincial of the Rhenish Province, i.e. Father Goswin Nickels.

When the ninth general of the order, Aloisius Gottifredi , died on March 12, 1652 just a few weeks after his election , the general assembly elected Nickel as its 10th general on March 17, 1652.

At the request of the health-ailing general and with the express approval of Pope Alexander VII , the order placed Vicar General Giovanni Paolo Oliva at his side from June 7, 1661 ; Among other things, nickel could hardly walk in old age.

Goswin Nickel died in Rome on July 31, 1664. Giovanni Paolo Oliva was his successor.

In the birthplace of Koslar (now Jülich) a street is named after the religious. The Jülich artist Arno Schlader also named his studio in Koslar de Nickel-Schuppen .
