Francesc de Borja ( Valencian ), Francisco de Borja ( Spanish ) or Francesco Borgia ( Italian ) (German Franz von Borja ; * October 28, 1510 in Gandia , Province of Valencia ; † September 30 / October 1, 1572 in Rome ) was the third general of the Jesuits and saint of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Francisco de Borja comes from the Borgia family . He was the son of Juan de Borja, 3rd Duke of Gandía , son of Juan Borgia and Maria Enríquez i de Luna, and his first wife Juana de Aragón y Gurrea (1492–1520), daughter of Alonso de Aragón, Archbishop of Saragossa and Valencia , and Ana de Gurrea, señora de Argabieso. He was thus a great-grandson of Pope Alexander VI. (on the father's side) and of King Ferdinand II of Aragón (on the mother's side).

De Borja was raised by Juan de Aragón, his mother's brother and Archbishop of Saragossa. In 1528 he went to the court of Emperor Charles V to enter his service. In the summer of 1529, at the age of 19, he married Leonor de Castro Mello y Meneses. ( Portuguese Leonor de Castro Melo e Menezes). The daughter of Isabel de Melo Barreto e Menezes and Álvaro de Castro came to Spain in 1526 as a lady-in-waiting with Isabella of Portugal , wife of Emperor Charles V.

After the death of his father in 1543, de Borja succeeded him as the 4th Duke of Gandía in the line of succession. When his wife Leonor died three years later, he renounced all secular titles in favor of his eldest son Carlos de Borja y Castro (1530–1592) and entered the Societas Jesu . In 1551 he was ordained a priest . His example caught on, and as a result many young rich nobles entered the order.

In the years 1554 to 1561 de Borja worked as provincial for Spain . When the second General of the Order, Diego Laínez, died on January 19, 1565 , the General Congregation appointed Francisco de Borja on July 2, 1565 to be the third General of the Order.

De Borja saw his task primarily in promoting the order in Central and South America .

Francisco de Borja died in Rome on October 1, 1572 at the age of 61. He was succeeded by Everard Mercurian . 1624 Francisco de Borja was by Pope Gregory XV. beatified and canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X. He is the patron saint of Gandía and is considered the patron saint against earthquakes. His feast day is October 10th.

In his play El gran duque de Gandia, Calderón de la Barca thematizes the life of Francisco de Borja.
