Lorenzo Ricci SJ (born August 2, 1703 in Florence , † November 24, 1775 in Castel Sant'Angelo , Rome ) was the 18th general of the Societas Jesu .

Life

Ricci comes from one of the oldest and most distinguished families in Tuscany . After successfully attending the Jesuit grammar school in Prato , Ricci entered the Societas Jesu on November 16, 1718 at the age of 15. He studied at the Collegio Sant'Andrea and after completing his studies was called to teach at the religious college in Siena . There he taught rhetoric and philosophy from 1725 to 1731 .

Then he studied again in Rome himself . His studies ended on August 15, 1736, the day on which he also took his religious vows. He stayed in Rome as a lecturer until 1741. In 1743 Ricci was appointed professor of theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. In 1751 Ricci moved to the Collegio Romano as a spiritual director . In 1755 the 17th General of the Order, Aloisius Centurioni , appointed him Secretary of the Order. When Centurioni died on October 2 of the same year, the General Assembly of the Order elected Lorenzo Ricci on May 21, 1758 as the 18th general of the Societas Jesu.

Ricci tried to protect the crisis-ridden order by making the order even closer to Pope Clement XIII. tape. This, a great patron and patron of the order, explicitly confirmed with the Bull Apostolicum pascendi of April 7, 1765 the existence of the Societas Jesu .

His successor, Pope Clement XIV. Saw this fundamentally differently and with his bull Dominus ac redemptor on July 21, 1773, the abolition of the order . On August 16, 1773 the mother house of the order was confiscated and its general Lorenzo Ricci was arrested. On September 23, 1773 Ricci was imprisoned in Castel Sant'Angelo .

At the age of 72, Lorenzo Ricci died on November 24th, 1775 in the dungeons of Castel Sant'Angelo.
