Diego Laínez , occasionally also Diego Laynez , (* 1512 in Almazán , Castile , † January 19, 1565 in Rome ) was the 2nd general of the Societas Jesu .

Life

Diego Laínez was born in 1512 as the eldest son of a Marran family in Almazán ( Soria Province ). From 1528 he studied together with Alfonso Salmerón at the University of Alcalá and completed this study in 1532 with a Magister artium . Then he went with Salméron to the Sorbonne in Paris to study theology. There he soon made the acquaintance of his compatriot Ignatius von Loyola .

On August 15, 1534, Laínez was one of seven students ( Peter Faber , Francisco Javier , Simon Rodrigues de Azevedo , Alfonso Salmerón , Nicolás Bobadilla , Diego Laínez and Ignatius von Loyola ) who were led by Loyolas in the Chapel of St. Denis on Montmartre to make a vow. Now they wanted to live in poverty and chastity and proselytize Palestine. This day is considered the actual foundation day of the Societas Jesu.

In 1537, Laínez and his fellow students traveled to Rome to seek official recognition of their community from the Holy See. Pope Paul III promised his support. Each of the seven should be ordained a priest and be allowed to missionize in the Holy Land.

When the mission trip could not take place due to the uncertain political situation, Laínez was ordained a priest on June 24, 1537 together with Loyola in Venice . Back in Rome, Laínez received from Pope Paul III. a chair in dogmatic theology at the University of Rome.

In addition, Laínez was sent together with Alfonso Salméron, Lefévre, Le Jaye and Covillon as papal representative to the Council of Trent . There Laínez led the theological disputes under the responsibility of Cardinal Marcello Cervini, later Pope Marcellus II .

In 1552/1553 Laínez was appointed Provincial of the Italian Order Province. On August 4, 1556 he was appointed vicar general. After the death of Loyola (July 31, 1556) the General Assembly of the Order elected him on July 2, 1558 as the 2nd General of the Order.

Under his leadership the order experienced a great boom. His first act in his new office was to change the orientation of the order from pure pastoral care to a teaching and educational order. Some time later Pope Pius IV allowed the order to also award academic degrees. By founding many new colleges, Laínez also broadened the base of the order.

Diego Laínez died on January 19, 1565 in Rome at the age of 53. Francisco de Borja became his successor.
