Giovanni Paolo Oliva (born October 4, 1600 in Genoa , † November 26, 1681 in Rome ) was the 11th general of the Societas Jesu .

Life

At the age of 16, Oliva joined the Societas Jesu. After completing his training, he worked as a lecturer in Rome for many years. The high point of his teaching activity was his appointment as rector of the Collegium Germanicum- Hungaricum in Rome.

On June 7, 1661 he was appointed vicar general of the order with the right of succession (vicarius perpetuus cum iure succedendi). This meant that Oliva was proclaimed the next general of the order on the day of Goswin Nickel's death . On July 31, 1664 it happened as planned.

Oliva worked under the Popes Innocent X. , Alexander VII. , Clemens IX. and Innocent XI. as apostolic pulpit speaker. During his entire tenure, Oliva tried to curb the influence of the nobility (especially from France ) on the order.

In the quietist controversy , all those involved praised him as a level-headed mediator. He personally defended the confessor of the French king, François d'Aix de Lachaise , to Pope Innocent XI.

Gian Paolo Oliva died in Rome on November 26, 1681 at the age of 81. His successor was Charles de Noyelle .
