Arturo Marcelino Sosa Abascal SJ (born November 12, 1948 in Caracas , Venezuela ) is a Venezuelan Jesuit , Roman Catholic theologian and political scientist . Since 2016 he has been the 31st Superior General of the Society of Jesus . As the head of the Jesuit order, he is in the footsteps of St. Ignatius of Loyola , the first superior general of the Jesuits.

Life

Arturo Sosa joined the religious order of the Jesuits in 1966 and studied Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and graduated in 1972 with a degree in philosophy from the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in Caracas . On July 30, 1977 he was ordained a priest. In 1990 he graduated from the Universidad Central de Venezuela with a degree in political science with a doctorate. He has published several books on Venezuelan history and politics and was editor-in-chief of the Revista SIC magazine for Catholic social ethics and politics from 1976 to 1996 .

Until his election to leading religious offices, Sosa mainly worked in research and teaching and dealt with questions from the area of ​​tension between political science, Catholic social teaching and ecclesiastical and social reality in Venezuela. He worked at the Faculty of Political Science at the Universidad Central de Venezuela and the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello. In 2004 he was visiting professor at the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at Georgetown University in Washington, DC . From 2004 to 2014 he was rector of the Jesuit University in Táchira , where he held the chairs for “Contemporary Political Theory” and “Social Change in Venezuela” at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Until 1996, Father Arturo Sosa was coordinator for the social apostolate of the Jesuits in Venezuela and director of the Centro Gumilla , an institution for research and social engagement of the Jesuits in Caracas. From 1996 to 2004 he was Provincial of the Jesuits in Venezuela. At the 35th General Congregation of the Order in 2008 he was appointed one of its advisors by Superior General Adolfo Nicolás . From 2014 to 2016 he was a delegate in the Curia of the Society of Jesus responsible for the houses and interprovincial works of the Jesuits in Rome. These are the institutions that depend directly on the Superior General of the Jesuits. In addition to various colleges, these include the Pontifical Gregorian University, the Pontifical Biblical Institute , the Pontifical Istituto Orientale and the Vatican Observatory .

The 36th General Congregation, the assembly of delegates of the Jesuit Order worldwide, elected him on October 14, 2016 to succeed Father General Adolfo Nicolás.

On July 8, 2019, the Pope appointed him a member of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life for five years .

In addition to his native Spanish , Arturo Sosa also speaks Italian and English .
