Táchira [ ˈtatʃiɾa ] is one of the 23 states of Venezuela and is located in the Andean region in the west of the country. The capital of the state is San Cristóbal .

The name comes from " tachure ", the name of a plant ( Jatropa gossypifolia ) in a Chibcha language .

economy

The main source of income for the state is livestock, fishing and agriculture. The main crops are garlic , bananas ( Cambur , the small, sweet variant and Plátano ), sugar cane , sugar, beans , onions , potatoes and tomatoes .

It also has mineral resources such as coal , copper , phosphorus and uranium .

In Táchira (and not in Zulia, today's oil center), the country's first oil was produced in 1878 (the drilling at that time was still carried out by hand). Today oil production has almost come to a standstill.

Sons and daughters of the state

An unusually large number of presidents come from Táchira (and also the majority of 20th century presidents):

Sports

Once a year, the Vuelta al Táchira takes place in Táchira , a cycle race that usually takes place in 8 stages.
