Barinas is one of the 23 states in Venezuela . The capital is Barinas . The former president of the country, Hugo Chávez , was born in this state. The current governor is his brother and former minister of education, Adán Chávez Frías . The mayor of the Municipio Alberto Arvelo Torrealba, Anibal Chávez, is also a brother of the former president.

geography

Barinas is mainly located in the Llanos. The area consists mainly of very flat pasture lands, which are crossed by numerous rivers. In the northwest there is a mountainous rim, part of the Venezuelan Andes. The Apure River forms the state's southern border.

history

Georg Hohermuth von Speyer and Nikolaus Federmann explored the region in 1534 on their way to the Andes.

In 1542 Philipp von Hutten traveled from Coro to Colombia via this area. In 1547, Alonso Pérez de Tolosa, who came from El Tocuyo , crossed the Barinas area.
