history

The Guayones, a tribe of the Jirajara group, lived in this region when the Europeans arrived. The region was densely populated and agriculturally very productive.

At the time of the Welser rule, the European settlers of Venezuela were concentrated in Coro, on the coast. The Coro region was very dry and barely fertile. Since the Welser were on forays in search of El Dorado, the Spaniard Juan de Carvajal decided to lead settlers from Coro to the El Tocuyo area in order to establish a Spanish settlement there.

El Tocuyo was the administrative seat of the province of Venezuela between 1546 and 1548.

economy

Agriculture is the main engine of the region. Nestlé has a branch in the city.

Infrastructure

There is a public library, the Alcides Losada Library.
