The Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela ( PSUV ; German  " United Socialist Party of Venezuela " ) is a political party in Venezuela that was formed from left-wing political alliances and supporters of the Bolivarian Revolution . The party chairman has been Nicolás Maduro since 2013 , who has also been President of Venezuela since 2013 .

The party is the largest party in Venezuela and the largest left-wing party in South America . The number of members is estimated at 7 million. Since 1999 it has governed with its chairmen Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro .

Since the last presidential election in Venezuela in 2018, numerous western states have not recognized Maduro as a legitimate president, claiming that the election was not democratic, free and fair. On February 3, 2019 - after a failed ultimatum by the USA , Canada , Australia and some European countries (the EU Commission , France , Germany , Spain , the Netherlands , Austria , Great Britain ) Maduro to immediately call for presidential elections - they recognized the speaker of parliament and Opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president and ordered new elections. Russia and numerous left or socialist states ( China , North Korea , Cuba , Mexico , Nicaragua ), however, continued to support Maduro.

history

After Hugo Chávez won the 2006 elections in Venezuela again, he believed that the parties that supported the Bolivarian Revolution should be brought together, including parties such as Movimiento Quinta República (MVR), Movimento Electoral del Pueblo (MEP), the Unión Popular Venezuela (UPV) and the Socialist League. The founding congress took place between January 12th and March 9th, 2008 when the new party's provisional board was elected.

In the local and regional elections on November 23, 2008, candidates for the United Socialist Party of Venezuela won 81% of the mayoral posts in town halls and 77% of the provincial governors' posts.

In the parliamentary elections on September 26, 2010, the United Socialist Party of Venezuela reached 60% of the clientele.

The revelations of Swiss-Leaks revealed that the leadership of the PSUV, popularly known in Venezuela as “Boliburguesía” ( bourgeoisie of the Bolivarian revolution), had transferred large sums of money to HSBC Private Banking Holdings (Suisse) SA accounts .

At the beginning of May 2015, the Marea Socialista (“Socialist Flood”) movement split off from the PSUV. Originating from left-wing trade union circles, this originally Trotskyist current had long criticized the course of Chavez's successor Nicolás Maduro . She accuses him of betraying socialism.
