Monagas is one of the 23 states of Venezuela ; it is located in the northeast of the country. The capital is Maturín at 67 m above sea level, the seventh largest city in Venezuela.
location
Monagas is located in the northeast region of Venezuela. The neighboring states are Sucre in the north, Delta Amacuro in the east, Bolívar and Anzoátegui in the south and Anzoátegui in the west.
economy
Monagas is included in the "Orinoco Belt". In the Orinoco Basin, there are huge oil deposits or oil sands and heavy and extra heavy oil. The Guárico , Anzoátegui and the Delta Amacuro state also belong to the belt .
The first successful oil wells were carried out in the Orinoco Basin during the First World War. They made Venezuela at times a very important producer worldwide. The fall in prices in recent years and the refusal to invest a lot of money from the income during the high oil prices from 2000 to 2008 in the exploration and renewal of the plants are now leading to a decline in production. Venezuela is largely on the verge of national bankruptcy, despite a 60-fold increase in the domestic gasoline price around the beginning of April 2016.

Monagas is divided into thirteen districts ( Municipios ), with the Maturín district accounting for 46.13% of the state area and 56.7% of the population.
