Halikko
Halikko [ ˈhɑlikːɔ ] is a former municipality in southwest Finland . In early 2009 it was incorporated into the city of Salo .
Halikko is located in the Varsinais-Suomi landscape on the lower reaches of the Halikonjoki River, around three kilometers from the city center of Salo. The state road one of Turku (48 km west) to Helsinki (117 km east) leads through the town. The former municipality of Halikko had an area of 358.73 km². In the south, the municipality had a share of the coast of the Halikonlahti bay. Halikko also owned a smaller area on the northeast tip of the island of Kimitoön . The last population of the community was 9788. The community was monolingual Finnish - speaking .
The main attraction of Halikko is the church of Halikko . The medieval stone church was built around 1470 and converted into a cruciform church in 1812–1814. The wooden church of fishingiemi on the island of Kimitoön dates back to 1772, next to it there is a modern church in the village of Vaskio.
The first written mention of Halikko comes from the year 1313. The port of Rikala in the area of Halikko was already an important trading place during the Iron Age . Archaeological finds indicate trade contacts with the Vikings . The first manors were built in Halikko in the 14th century. In 1967 the community fishingiemi was incorporated. At the beginning of 2009 Halikko was incorporated into Salo together with the eight municipalities of Kiikala , Kisko , Kuusjoki , Muurla , Perniö , Pertteli , Särkisalo and Suomusjärvi .
