Mérida is a federal state of Venezuela and is located in the Andean region in the west of the country, in the north it borders on Lake Maracaibo . The capital of the state is the city of Mérida , which is located at 1,630 meters above sea level.

Tourism as well as agriculture and mining are of economic importance .

In Mérida is the Teleférico de Mérida cable car , which according to its own information is the highest and longest in the world and leads in four sections up to about 4,800 meters to the Pico Espejo.

The State of Mérida is also home to the Universidad de Los Andes (ULA) .
