Centro Penitenciario de la Región Andina

The Centro Penitenciario de la Región Andina is a prison in the state of Mérida , Venezuela . It was built between 1997 and 1998 for 850 inmates. It currently has at least 926 inmates, most of whom are being held there for robbery or murder.

In 2006 the median age was 30 years. In March 2012, 8 prisoners were killed and 12 injured in rioting there. Violent protests broke out again in July. This time certain prisoners refused to be transported to other institutions. So far about 20 prisoners have been killed.
