Bailadores is the capital of the district ( Municipio ) Rivas Dávila in the southwesternmost of the Venezuelan states of Mérida . Bailadores, on a plateau of the Cordilleras , in the valley of the Mocotíes river, is known for its agricultural products and as a popular destination for excursions.

The Rivas Davila district is divided into eight parishes named Gerónimo Maldonado, Las Playitas, Las Tapias, Otrabanda, La Villa (Bailadores), Bodoque, San Pablo and Mariño (Mesa de Adrián) .

history

Bailadores was founded by the captain Luis Martín Martín on September 14, 1601 at the instigation of the judge Pedro de Sandes from Santa Fé de Bogotá . Since Bailadores is located on one of the main roads of the western Cordilleras and thus connects the center of the country with the west of Venezuela, the place was also an important stop during the independence struggles. The Rivas Dávila district, along with the Venezuelan capital Caracas, is the most historic region in the country. Due to its location as a passage through the Cordilleras, the region was known as the western gateway to Mérida as early as the 16th century. All freedom fighters and people who were important for the country Venezuela came along here: The first conquerors (1558) as well as Simón Bolívar (1813) or the Comuneros (1881) and the participants of the Revolución Restauradora (1899).

geography

The Trans-Andean Road has been connecting this region with the interior and lowlands of Venezuela since 1925. Special highlights along this trans-Andean road are the lagoons of Aldea Mariño (Las Palmas y Los Lirios) at over 3,000 meters above sea level.
