Sucre is one of the 23 states of Venezuela . It is located in the northeast of the country. In the north it borders on the Caribbean , in the south on the states of Anzoátegui and Monagas , in the east on the Gulf of Paria and in the west on the Gulf of Cariaco . The state owes its name to the Venezuelan Marshal Antonio José de Sucre , a hero of the South American War of Independence, who was born in Cumaná , today's capital of the state.

The state is traversed by the Rio Manzanares.

Historical

Columbus landed for the first time on the American mainland in the Pariah region, in what is now the east of the Sucre state. He was here between August 4th and August 12th, 1498.

The Indians who populated the region were mainly Guaiqueríes (related to the Waraos according to Humboldt) and Chaimas (of Caribbean origin).

This region was visited by Alexander von Humboldt in 1799 and 1800 and described in his report.

economy

Fishing, agriculture and tourism are the main industries in the region. The Mochima National Park between Anzoátegui and Sucre is one of the main attractions of tourism in Eastern Venezuela.

Administrative division

The state of Sucre was originally part of the Province of New Andalusia or Province of Cumaná. Around 1856 the province of Maturín was split off from it. The State of Cumaná was founded around 1864 and became part of the State of Oriente in 1879.

From 1891 it was called "Gran Estado Bermúdez" until 1898 when it was finally renamed "State of Sucre". Around 1901 the states of Sucre and Maturín were separated and in 1904 the state of Bermúdez was reintegrated. In 1909 the borders of the two separate states Sucre and Monagas were finally drawn.
