Carúpano is a city on the Caribbean coast of Venezuela , in the state of Sucre . It is located about 120 km east of Cumaná , the state capital. Carúpano has about 170,000 inhabitants; because of the university (UDO) and a technical college, an above-average number of young people.

Carúpano is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese Carúpano .

history

Christopher Columbus set foot on the American mainland for the first and only time during his third voyage in this region at Macuto .

A prominent event in the history of Venezuela was December 7th, 1814, when Simón Bolívar in Carúpano ordered the release of the slaves . The first underwater cable that connected America and Europe in the 19th century also had historical significance . It ran from Marseille in France to Carúpano. The cable house (Casa del cable) in the historic, colonial city center can still be visited today.

On May 4, 1962, the "Carupanazo", a military uprising against Rómulo Betancourt , broke out in Carúpano , but was crushed the next day. About 400 insurgents were arrested, 6 people died and 15 were wounded. Since some MPs from the communist PCV and MIR were among the insurgents, these two parties were banned.

economy

The city lives from tourism and fishing, as well as the export of cocoa, coffee, sugar, cotton and rum. The city is an ideal starting point for travelers in Venezuela. Four national parks are in the immediate vicinity of the city, including the Paria Peninsula National Park, the Turuepano National Park, which is similar to the Orinoco Delta, as well as Mochima and the Guacharo Cave.
