Rubio is a city in the Venezuelan Andes in the state of Táchira . Founded in 1794 by Gervasio Rubio, the city is the administrative seat of the Municipio Junín and has 68,869 inhabitants according to the Venezuelan census of 2001. The captain of Nueva Granada visited the region in 1602. At that time, four villages were officially founded in this area.
history
Various ethnic groups such as the Canias, the Carapos and the Queremales inhabited this region when the Spaniards arrived. In the following years the Spaniards introduced the system of encomiendas here.
The conquistador Juan Maldonado was probably the first European who explored the Rubio area in the middle of the 16th century and made contact with the indigenous people.
On December 9th, 1794 Mr. Gervasio Rubio bought the hacienda “La Yegüera”, which until then belonged to the children of the captain Omaña de Rivadeneyra. He improved the building areas (where there was mainly sugar) and introduced the first coffee plantations.
He also had a church built, which was consecrated by his son, the priest Carlos Rubio. The settlement was first called “Santa Bárbara de la Yegüera”.
