Peter Hans Kolvenbach SJ (born November 30, 1928 in Druten , Netherlands ; † November 26, 2016 in Beirut ) was the 29th general of the Societas Jesu from 1983 to 2008 .

Life

Kolvenbach was born in 1928 as the son of a businessman from Nijmegen and his wife Jacoba Johanna Petronella Domesino. After completing school at the Petrus Canisius College in Nijmegen, Kolvenbach joined the Societas Jesu in 1948 at the age of 20 . In September 1958 he was sent to Lebanon with a group of Dutch Jesuits . There he studied at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut - Aschrafiyya theology . Here he was ordained a priest in 1961 (in the rite of the Armenian Catholic Church ).

He then worked in Beirut as a lecturer in philosophy , linguistics and Armenian . He became biritual because of his interest in the Armenian tradition and had the right to celebrate liturgy in the Latin and Armenian rites. In 1974 he was appointed Provincial of the Vice Province of the Middle East ( Lebanon , Syria and Egypt ). In 1981 Pedro Arrupe called him back to Rome and entrusted him with the management of the Pontifical Oriental Institute .

On September 13, 1983 Kolvenbach was elected 29th General of the Order at the 33rd General Assembly of the Order, replacing the Commissioners Paolo Dezza and Giuseppe Pittau appointed by the Pope . In 2007 Kolvenbach resigned his position as general of the Jesuits, received the approval of the Pope and convened a general congregation for January 2008 to elect a new general. On January 14, 2008, the 35th General Congregation accepted Kolvenbach's resignation as Superior General.

Kolvenbach was a permanent member of the Vatican Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life .

He died four days before his 88th birthday, in November 2016.
