Life

Claudio Acquaviva came from the House of Acquaviva , he was the youngest son of Giovanni Antonio Acquaviva d'Aragona, the Duke of Atri . In 1568 Aquaviva joined the Societas Jesu at the age of 25 .

Over the years he held the offices of provincial in Naples and later in Rome. When Everard Mercurian died on August 1, 1580 , the General Assembly of the Order elected Claudio Acquaviva on February 19, 1581 as the fifth general of the Jesuit Order. At the age of 38, he became the youngest order general to date. He was also the first superior general who did not come from Spain, which caused discontent among the Spanish order members, which he was able to overcome. Acquaviva exercised his generalate strictly on the matter, but binding and modest in dealings.

The general's nephew was the blessed Rodolfo Acquaviva (1550–1583), Jesuit missionary and martyr in India.
