Rodolfo Acquaviva (born October 2, 1550 in Atri ; † July 25, 1583 near Cuncolim , Goa ) is a blessed of the Catholic Church. He was an Italian Jesuit and missionary who died a martyr in India.

Career

As the son of the Duke of Atri , when his uncle Claudio Acquaviva entered the Society of Jesus in 1567, he took over his position at the court of Pope Pius V , but wanted to follow his uncle and, after two months of pleading, received his father's consent. On April 2, 1568 he began his novitiate , first studying literature in Macerata , then philosophy and theology in Rome . For missionary service in India determined he received in 1578 in Lisbon , the ordination and reached that same year Goa, where he was first at the College of St. Paul taught, and in February 1580 along with another Jesuit to Fatehpur Sikri to the court of the Great Mogul Akbar I departed who was interested in Christianity .

Since the ruler did not want to be converted , the Jesuits returned to Goa in 1583, where Acquaviva was made head of the missions on the Salsette peninsula . In July he sailed there with Pietro Berno and three other Jesuits and immediately began a visit to the missions that took him to Cuncolim. When they got there on July 25th, a tribal leader warned them not to enter the village because it was in an uproar over internal disputes. While the Jesuits waited outside Cunculim for the situation to calm down, they were attacked and murdered by Hindu warriors.

On April 2, 1893, Acquaviva and Pietro Berno and four other Jesuits killed with them by Pope Leo XIII. beatified . Her feast day is February 4th.

Family relationships

Claudio Acquaviva (1543-1615), the 5th Jesuit general, was the martyr's uncle (brother of his father). Maternal uncle (mother's brother) was Cardinal Rodolfo Pio da Carpi (1500–1564). Rodolfo Acquaviva was also related to Aloisius von Gonzaga ; both descended from the same great-great-grandmother.

His older brother Giulio was also a cardinal, as was his younger brother Ottavio , who was also Archbishop of Naples from 1605 to 1612 . Another brother Orazio was a Capuchin and from 1592 to 1617 Bishop of Caiazzo . His great-nephew Ottavio Acquaviva d'Aragona was also elevated to cardinal in 1654.
