Ottavio Acquaviva d'Aragona , also Ottavio Aquaviva d'Aragonia (born September 23, 1609 in Naples , † September 26, 1674 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He was the third of the six children of Giosia Acquaviva, 12th Duke of Atri, and his wife Margherita Ruffo from the family of the Princes of Scilla, the Acquaviva family belonged to the high nobility of the Kingdom of Naples . His two great uncles Giulio Acquaviva d'Aragona and Ottavio Acquaviva d'Aragona (the elder) were cardinals. Later his own great-nephew, Francesco Acquaviva d'Aragona, also became a cardinal. Other cardinals from the same family were Giovanni Vincenzo Acquaviva d'Aragona , Troiano Acquaviva d'Aragona and Pasquale Acquaviva d'Aragona . During the pontificate of Urban VIII he moved to Rome, where he was made Honorary Chamberlain of His Holiness . He was a relator of the Congregation for the Administration of Goods and held a number of curial offices between 1638 and 1654 .

Innocent X raised him in the consistory of March 2, 1654 - the last of this Pope - to cardinal priest and on March 23 of the same year awarded him the cardinal's hat and the titular church of San Bartolomeo all'Isola . As cardinal, Ottavio Acquaviva d'Aragona took part in the conclave of 1655 , which Pope Alexander VII elected. On March 18, 1658, he decided on the titular church of Santa Cecilia . He was a participant in the conclave in 1667 , from which Clement IX. emerged as Pope. From January 14, 1669 to January 19, 1671 Ottavio Acquaviva d'Aragona was chamberlain of the Holy Cardinals College . He took part in the conclave 1669-1670 , which led to the election of Pope Clement X , but left the conclave on February 27, 1670.

Ottavio Acquaviva d'Aragona died on September 26, 1674 of a haemorrhage caused by a doctor during a phlebotomy . He was buried in his titular church, Santa Cecilia .
