Requiem - The Roman Pope and Cardinal Tombs of the Early Modern Era (in short: Requiem project , own spelling REQUIEM ) is an interdisciplinary research project at the Institute for Art and Visual History at the Humboldt University in Berlin and at the Department of History at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal .

introduction

The Requiem project is an art-historical-historical research project with the aim of researching the Roman papal and cardinal tombs of the early modern period . The study period extends from 1417 (end of the great occidental schism with the election of Martin V. Colonna at the Council of Constance ) to 1798 (proclamation of the Roman republic and the associated temporary end of the secular rule of the popes). The project has been based at the Institute for Art and Visual History at the Humboldt University in Berlin since 2001 ( Horst Bredekamp ). In cooperation with the Department of History at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) ( Volker Reinhardt ) until 2009 , it has since worked in cooperation with the History Department of the Bergische Universität Wuppertal ( Arne Karsten ). The project was financed from 2001 to 2004 by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation and since 2005 by the DFG ( German Research Foundation ).

Database

The research results of the Requiem project are freely available on a website ( open access and open source ). It contains an online database that is characterized by a two-part structure: the prosopographical information on cardinals ("Career", "Finances" and "Client relationships") and the data records on the papal and cardinal tombs ("Location", "Origin "," Artist "and" client "). A search mask allows targeted access to certain information. The Requiem database is being developed as free software with open source code under the GNU General Public License (GPLv3). The scientific data and the images of the research project are made available on the Requiem website and can be used under the terms of the "GNU Free Documentation License". The Requiem database is citable thanks to references to literature and sources for each individual item.

photos

The data sets contain photos that show images of the individual tombs as well as portraits of the Pope and Cardinals. These are provided with background information on the performing artists, the date of creation and a reference to the source.

Content orientation

The aim of the Requiem project is on the one hand to capture the tombs as works of art iconographically, to interpret them iconologically and to classify and determine them using the typology developed in the course of the project work. On the other hand, the tombs are examined taking into account their historical, political and social context. The linking of the prosopographical with the grave records in the database supports this synopsis. This allows fundamental conclusions to be drawn about the client's interests. In numerous individual studies, the project shows that the papal and cardinal tombs not only served as memorial monuments for the deceased, but also to secure and increase the status and power of posterity who, through strategic investment in the memory of important ancestors, participated in their prestige .
