Arne Karsten (* 1969 in Hildesheim ) is a German historian and art historian and teaches early modern history at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal .

Live and act

Arne Karsten studied art history, history and philosophy in Göttingen , Rome and Berlin and received his doctorate in 2001 with a thesis on Roman cardinal nepotas of the 17th century. He then worked as a research associate on the REQUIEM project until 2009 . Since the winter semester 2009/10 he has been a junior professor for early modern history at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal. In 2016 he completed his habilitation there with a thesis on Italy's journey into modernity. Naval warfare and state building in the context of the naval battle at Lissa in 1866 .

His main research interests are Italian and Venetian history and art history of the early modern period as well as the cultural history of court society. In addition to numerous research articles, several cardinals and artist biographies (e.g. by Bernardino Spada and Gian Lorenzo Bernini ), he also wrote articles for feature sections and popular scientific magazines such as Damals or Spiegel Geschichte .

In April 2014, allegations of plagiarism arose in relation to the book Große Seeschlachten , written together with Olaf B. Rader , which ultimately led to the publishing house CH Beck taking the book off the market. Karsten himself was completely exonerated, since all plagiarized text passages were in the chapters written by Rader.
