Nicotiana sect. Alatae is a section of the tobacco genus ( Nicotiana ). Eight species are counted to it.

description

The species of the Alatae section are rosette-forming , herbaceous plants . Their leaves are perennial and can have various forms of hair , but they are usually sticky. Only a few leaves are formed on the upper stems, these are protruding and also significantly smaller than the leaves of the rosette on the bottom.

The flowers usually open towards evening and fade the next day, only occasionally they bloom during the day. The crown is zygomorphic and salver-shaped. The color can be green, white or pink to red. There is a sudden widening of the corolla tube near the coronet throat. The corolla lobes are pointed or rounded in Nicotiana langsdorfii .

The number of chromosomes is n = 9 or n = 10.

The species are distributed from Mexico to Uruguay .
