The long-flowered tobacco ( Nicotiana longiflora ) is a species of the tobacco genus ( Nicotiana ).
features
The long-flowered tobacco is an annual or short-lived perennial plant that reaches heights of 60 to 100 centimeters. The plant is sparsely hairy. The lower leaves are 10 to 30 centimeters long and oval-elliptical, their stems are winged. The upper leaves encompass the stems. The flowers are 4 to 12 inches long. The calyx has 10 ribs or furrows. The corolla tube is very narrow, over 5 centimeters long, finely haired and pale yellow, gray or reddish in color.
The flowering period extends from July to August.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.
Occurrence
Long-flowered tobacco occurs in South America in ruderal places and floodplains in Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
Systematics
The species is classified within the genus Nicotiana in the section Alatae . Molecular biological studies showed that Nicotiana plumbaginifolia is the sister species to Nicotiana longiflora .
use
Long-flowered tobacco is rarely used as an ornamental plant for summer flower beds and as a scented plant. The species has been in culture since the first half of the 19th century.
