Antonio José Cavanilles
Antonio José Cavanilles (born January 16, 1745 in Valencia , † May 4, 1804 in Madrid ) was a Spanish botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Cav. "
Life
Cavanilles was initially a clergyman and later taught philosophy in Murcia . In 1777 he went as a tutor of the children of the Duque del Infantado to Paris and dedicated himself during a ten-year stay to the study of botany . After his return he explored the Spanish flora and in 1801 became director of the botanical garden in Madrid .
In 1792 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg . In 1804, the year of his death, he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .
Cavanilles is considered to have discovered the Cova de les Calaveres , a cave near Benidoleig south of Valencia .

The plant genera Cavanillesia Ruiz & Pav. And Cavanilla J.F.Gmel. , both named from the mallow family (Malvaceae).
