In 1113 the church was restored on behalf of Pope Paschal II , the construction of the bell tower took place in 1118. Another restoration, which involved some renovations, was carried out in 1583 according to the plans of the architect Martino Longhi the Elder (1534–1591). In the years 1623 to 1624, the main facade was built according to the plans of Orazio Torriani or Martino Longhi the Younger . The interior was redesigned between 1720 and 1739 in the Baroque style and between 1852 and 1865 in the style of Historicism .

The Romanesque- style Marian fresco and the richly decorated marble fountain built around the year 1000 are particularly worth seeing .

The church is dedicated to the Apostle and Saint Bartholomew , whose bones were brought to Rome by Emperor Otto II in 983, where they are now kept in San Bartolomeo all'Isola. The inscription on the facade also refers to this. The saint's brainshell was brought to the Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew in Frankfurt am Main in the 13th century .

Since 1993 the church has been cared for by the Community of Sant'Egidio ; in 2002 she consecrated Pope John Paul II to the new martyrs of the 20th century. Relics and memorabilia are on display in the six side chapels, including a missal from Archbishop Oscar Romero , a letter from the beatified Austrian conscientious objector Franz Jägerstätter to his family, written a few days before his murder, a letter from Bonn writer Heinrich Ruster to his wife from the Sachsenhausen concentration camp of March 8, 1942, a relic of the blessed Cardinal Clemens August Graf von Galen and memories of the resistance fighters Joannes Baptista Sproll , Eugen Bolz and Maria Restituta Kafka .
