Jorge José de Amorim Campos , called Jorginho (born August 17, 1964 in Rio de Janeiro ), is a Brazilian football coach and former player.

Player career

Jorginho played from 1978 in the youth of America FC from Rio, in whose fighting team he was included in 1983. In 1984 he moved to Flamengo Rio de Janeiro where he immediately established himself as the successor to the position of right full-back and national player Leandro . He stayed with Flamengo until 1989, winning the state championship in Rio de Janeiro in 1986 and the Copa União of 1987, which is equivalent to the championship of Brazil . In 1989, he also won the Hamburg Harbor Cup with Flamengo .

In 1989 he moved to Germany to the Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen , which attracted many Brazilians during this time. He made his debut on September 15, 1989 (9th matchday) in a 2-0 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt ; his first goal was the hit to the 1-1 final on December 8, 1989 (20th matchday) in the away game at Borussia Mönchengladbach . In the Bundesliga, Bayer qualified fifth in its first season for the 1990/91 UEFA Cup , where Leverkusen were eliminated in the third round by Brøndby IF , while in the following two seasons only places in the upper midfield could be achieved.

For the 1992/93 season he moved to Bayern Munich , which attracted many Bayer Leverkusen players at the time. For Bayern he was used 67 times in the league until 1995 and in 1994 contributed to winning the German championship title. His goal for the 2-0 final score in the home game against FC Schalke 04 on May 7, 1994 (34th matchday), he dedicated to his fellow countryman, who died in an accident on May 1, 1994, the automobile racing driver Ayrton Senna . He left FC Bayern during the winter break of the 1994/95 season.

From 1995 to 1999 Jorginho was in Japan with Kashima Antlers under contract, with whom he won four titles. There he was also awarded the J. League Footballer of the Year award in 1996 .

After returning to Brazil, he played for São Paulo in 1999 , from 2000 to 2001 for CR Vasco da Gama with whom he won the Brazilian championship and the Copa Mercosur in 2000. In 2002 he played for Fluminense Rio de Janeiro . It was used from March 3 to April 14 four times (2 wins, 2 losses) in the championship games and thus contributed to winning the state championship in Rio de Janeiro .

National team

Jorginho took part in 1983 with the Brazilian U-20 national team at the Junior World Cup in Mexico , played five of six games (without a goal) and became the 1-0 victory of his team over the selection of Argentina Junior World Champion.

He made his debut in the Brazilian senior team as a substitute on June 21, 1987 in the game against Ecuador (4-1). At the Olympic soccer tournament in Seoul he played four games and lost with his selection in the final against the USSR on October 1, 1988 with 1: 2 goals after extra time. When he was substituted on August 13, 1989 for his 14th appearance in the 1-1 draw against Chile as part of the World Cup qualification , he was the first Brazilian national player to play in the German Bundesliga . The defender belonged to the Seleção , which advanced to the round of 16 at the 1990 World Cup in Italy and was world champion at the 1994 World Cup in the USA . In total he wore the national jersey 64 times until 1996 and scored three goals.

In October 2005 he was hired by the lower class America FC as a coach , whom he coached until the summer of 2006.

After his commitment at the end of August 2010, Jorginho was released two months later as coach of the Brazilian first division club Goiás EC in November 2010. From March 2011 to December 2011 he worked as a coach at Figueirense FC .

In January 2012 he took over the coaching position at the Japanese first division club and his ex-club Kashima Antlers . He signed a one-year contract until the end of December 2012. In late November 2012, Jorginho announced that he would not renew his contract. At the Brazilian first division club CR Flamengo, he was dismissed after four match days in June 2013 due to a failed season start.

In 2014 he coached Al-Wasl in the United Arab Emirates and from 2015 to 2016 CR Vasco da Gama. At the beginning of 2017, he replaced Guto Ferreira as coach of the first division promoted EC Bahia after the third match day . He was released at the end of July 2017.

In 2018 he oversaw the selection of Ceará SC and Vasco da Gama. At the beginning of 2019, Jorginho took over Ponte Preta. After poor results in the Série B 2019 , Jorginho was prematurely sacked after the 18th matchday on August 25th. At the time, the club was in eighth place in the table.

On September 23, 2019, Coritiba FC introduced Jorginho as the new coach. The league competitor of his previous club was at the time (the 23rd matchday) in eighth place in the table. Jorginho led the team to third place at the end of the season and thus to promotion to the Série A 2020 . After he could not agree with the club on the financial issues, he did not extend his contract with Coritiba after the end of the season. In August 2020, Jorginho was signed again by Coritiba. The club had sacked its coach Ney Franco after the fifth day of the Série A 2020.

National team

As an assistant coach , Jorginho supervised the Brazilian national team from July 2006, also during the 2010 World Cup . Failure in the quarter-finals by the Netherlands led to the sacking of national coach Dunga and Jorginho on July 4, 2010 after the tournament in South Africa .
