J.League Division 1 2001

The J.League Division 1 2002 was the tenth season of the highest division of the Japanese J.League and the fourth under the name Division 1 . Sixteen clubs took part in it. The regular season was played in two half-series and began on March 2, 2002. After the end of the second half-series on November 30, 2002, two games between the two half-series winners for the Japanese championship were originally planned. However, those games did not take place after Júbilo Iwata managed to win both series. For Júbilo it was the third J.League championship after 1997 and 1999 .

Relegated to the J.League Division 2 in 2003 were Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Consadole Sapporo .

mode

As in the previous season , the clubs faced each other twice, once at home and once away, but both half-series were counted as separate championships. If there was a tie after 90 minutes, the playing time was extended by two fifteen minutes, whereby the golden goal rule was applied. If it was still a draw after that, the game was counted as such.

There were three points for a win after regular time and two points for a win in extra time; in the event of a tie there was a counter for each team. The table for each semi-series was created according to the following criteria:

  1. Number of points scored
  2. Goal difference
  3. Goals scored
  4. Results of the games among themselves
  5. Decision game or coin toss

After the end of a half series, the club qualified with the most points for the finals of the Japanese championship. The winner of the finals qualified as Japanese champions for the 2004 AFC Champions League . To determine the two relegated teams, a table was formed over the entire season after the end of the season according to the same criteria as stated above, the two worst teams had to go into the second division.

Attendees

A total of sixteen teams took part in the season. No longer there were the bottom of the previous season, Cerezo Osaka and the penultimate Avispa Fukuoka , both of whom had to relegate to the J.League Division 2 2002 . Cerezo ended a seven-year membership in Division 1 with the descent, Avispa returned to the second division after six years at the highest level.

The two relegated teams were replaced by Kyōto Purple Sanga , the champions of Division 2 in 2001 , and the runner-up Vegalta Sendai . Vegalta played for the first time in its history in the top Japanese league, while Kyōto succeeded in returning immediately after relegation from the House of Lords in 2000.

Suntory Championship

For the first time in the history of the J.League there were no finals. The reason for this was the fact that both half series were won by Júbilo Iwata, which, according to the competition regulations, automatically led to the championship title. For Júbilo it was the third J.League title after 1997 and 1999 and the fourth Japanese championship overall; under the name Yamaha Motors succeeded in winning the Japan Soccer League 1987/88 .
