Marcelo Mendonça de Mattos (born February 10, 1984 in Indiaporã , Brazil ) is a Brazilian soccer player who plays in the central defensive midfield .

Career

Marcelo Mattos began his professional career in 1999 with the Brazilian third division club Mirassol Futebol Clube from São Paulo, where he was under contract until 2001. After stints at FC Tokyo and Ōita Trinita in the Japanese J-League , Mattos moved back to Brazil to AD São Caetano in 2003 . With his new club he managed to establish himself straight away and to find a place in the regular formation. In two seasons Mattos came to a total of 69 appearances and was able to win the first professional title of his career with the Campeonato Paulista . In 2005 Mattos moved to league rivals Corinthians São Paulo, where he formed the team's framework alongside players like Carlos Tévez and Javier Mascherano and was able to win the Brazilian championship . In two years at Corinthians Mattos made 50 first division appearances, scoring nine goals and was named the best defensive midfielder in the Brazilian league in 2005. In 2007 he moved to the Greek club Panathinaikos Athens for a transfer fee of three million euros, where he signed a four-year contract.

Mattos played his first European Cup match on September 20, 2007 at a UEFA Cup match against FC Artmedia Bratislava, which his team Panathinaikos won 2-1. Mattos has also had Italian citizenship since 2008 .

In 2001 Mattos took part in the U-17 World Cup with the Brazilian national team.
