Javier Alejandro Mascherano (Spanish pronunciation: [ mastʃeˈɾano ], Italian pronunciation: [ maskeˈraːno ]) (born June 8, 1984 in San Lorenzo , Province of Santa Fe ) is an Argentine - Italian football player .

Club career

Beginnings in South America

Mascherano made his competitive debut for River Plate on August 3, 2003 in a game against Club Atlético Nueva Chicago . Shortly thereafter, he played for River Plate in the final of the Copa Sudamericana against the Peruvian club Cienciano del Cuzco , which his club lost. He quickly became an integral part of the team and won the championship title with him at the end of the Clausura .

After another year as a regular at River Plate, he moved to Corinthians São Paulo for the remainder of the Brazilian season in 2005, where he also won the championship.

Mascherano in the Premier League

After half a year he left the club and, like his teammate and compatriot Carlos Tevez, moved to the English Premier League club West Ham United . This was surprising as both Mascherano and Tevez had been courted by many well-known European clubs. Because the transfer rights of the two Argentines were with an investment company and West Ham had disregarded the rule that no third party should influence the politics or the performance of a club when obliging the players, the club was fined eight million euros . It had even threatened a point deduction and the associated relegation to the Football League Championship . Relegated Sheffield United sued for West Ham United's rule violation to remain in the Premier League, which was dismissed by the Supreme Court.

On February 20, 2007 it was announced that Mascherano was moving from West Ham United to Liverpool FC until 2008 . Mascherano shouldn't have been allowed to change clubs again this season, as only one transfer per season is allowed per player and he had already moved from the Corinthians to West Ham. Due to the overlapping seasons in Europe and South America and because he only played seven games for West Ham United, Mascherano received special permission from FIFA and was from then on eligible to play for Liverpool FC. Just four days later, he played for his new employer for the first time in a 4-0 win over Sheffield United. With Liverpool he was in the final of the UEFA Champions League in his first season , but lost it 1: 2 against AC Milan . In March 2008 he extended his contract with Liverpool FC until 2012.

Title collector at FC Barcelona

In summer 2010 he moved to FC Barcelona and signed a four-year contract there. Despite his very small height for this position, he was often used as a central defender . On March 16, 2014, Mascherano completed his 100th league game for FC Barcelona. With FC Barcelona, Mascherano won several Spanish championships and cups. He has also won the UEFA Champions League , the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup twice . Mascherano usually formed the central defense with Gerard Piqué . In addition to 203 league appearances (one goal), he has a. a. 46 Copa del Rey and 68 Champions League appearances (each without a goal) to book. With 334 competitive appearances, Mascherano is the fourth most foreign player in the history of FC Barcelona after Lionel Messi , Phillip Cocu and Dani Alves . After moving increasingly to the second tier in the 2017/18 season, he left FC Barcelona at the end of January 2018 after seven and a half years and 16 titles.

Move to China

On January 26, 2018, Mascherano moved to the Chinese Super League for Hebei China Fortune .

Return to Argentina

At the beginning of 2020, Mascherano moved to the Club Estudiantes de La Plata in his home country Argentina .

National team career

Javier Mascherano played in several junior selections and was, among other things, captain of the U17 and U20 teams in his country.

His first international appearance for the Argentine senior team was against Uruguay on July 16, 2003 , before he even played his first first division game for River Plate .

In 2004 he took part in the Olympic football tournament with the U23 selection of his country and became Olympic champion in Athens . In the same year Mascherano was in the squad for the Copa America 2004 , in which he finished second with Argentina after the final defeat against Brazil .

A broken foot put Javier Mascherano out of action for a long time at the end of 2005, but he was fit again in time to take part in the 2006 World Cup in Germany as a regular in Argentina's squad . Argentina were eliminated from Germany in the quarter-finals on penalties .

In the summer of 2007, he again took part in the Copa America . Mascherano was used several times during the tournament and scored his first two international goals with the winning goal in the preliminary round game against Paraguay and a goal in the quarter-finals against Peru . The tournament victory was denied to him, however, because Argentina, as in 2004, lost to Brazil in the final.

For the 2008 Olympic Games in China , he was appointed to the Argentine squad as one of three players over the age of 23 , alongside Nicolás Pareja and Juan Román Riquelme . He took part in all six games of his team and was able to repeat the Olympic victory with Argentina. After this success, he is only the second Argentine ever to win Olympic gold twice.

The former Argentina coach Diego Maradona made it clear after taking office that he would like to see Mascherano as captain of the national team. Mascherano accepted this offer and replaced Javier Zanetti . At the 2010 World Cup , he led his team as captain into the quarter-finals, in which they lost 4-0 to the German team.

Mascherano took part in the 2014 World Cup and completed his 100th international match in the preliminary round with the game against Iran. In this tournament he reached the final with Argentina, which was lost 1-0 to Germany.

In 2015 and 2016, he lost the Copa América and Copa Centenario finals on penalties with Argentina .

Javier Mascherano took part in the 2018 World Cup in Russia as the record national player with the most appearances in the current squad of the national team of Argentina . After the elimination of his team in the round of 16 of the 2018 World Cup, he announced his resignation from the national team.
