Sky Sports is the name of several sports television channels in the United Kingdom and Ireland that are broadcast by the pay TV operator Sky plc .
background
The station, which first aired in Great Britain in March 1990, began broadcasting rugby and golf , before games of the German Bundesliga and Italian Serie A were added to the program in the summer when the corresponding rights were acquired. After the founding of the Premier League in the 1992/93 season, the broadcaster outdid its competitors BBC and ITV and developed into one of the most important private sports broadcasters.
In the 1990s, other offshoots established themselves in addition to the regular channel under the names Sky Sports 2 , Sky Sports 3 , Sky Sports Extra and Sky Sports Gold . At the same time, the broadcasting rights were extended to other European football leagues and competitions as well as other sports. In 2006 the station began broadcasting in HD format.
In 2007, Irish pay-TV provider Setanta Sports, a competitor, broke the Sky Sports monopoly on broadcasting the Premier League and managed to split broadcasting rights in negotiations with the league. As a result, Sky Sports lost market share, but remained the market leader.
